 Who is a Construction Professional?

In simple terms, Building/ Construction professionals are responsible for building things. They are trained and have the license to give their specific knowledge and experience to deliver the project.

They take part in the planning, drawing, costing, and performing of construction projects such as homes, commercial buildings, worship centres, hotels, markets, roads, bridges, and more.

A project can be either a new design, renovation, or remodelling of an old building. They remain involved in the project from its conception to completion.

So, I will list 10 of the most famous professionals involved in the Building Construction industry in Nigeria; I will talk briefly about the roles each plays in a construction project.

 Architect

Most lay people refer to every building professional or someone supervising a construction site as an Architect or Engineer, and I am sure my fellow building professionals can relate.

In simple terms, we can say that an Architect goes through formal training and obtains a license to design buildings using a computer or paper and pencil drawings.

The work of the Architect does not end only in design. He supervises the project and ensures it is executed according to the designs and specifications.

 Civil Engineers

Civil Engineers are responsible for designing and constructing bridges, structural elements of buildings, roads, tunnels, dams, power plants, highways, airports, and similar projects.

They undergo training and obtain a license to design safe, well-planned, budget-friendly and durable structures.

Mechanical Engineer

The Mechanical Engineer design, build, test, and inspect mechanical devices and systems on a construction project.

Once the Architect is done with the building designs, the mechanical engineers draw the piping systems for the house. They determine where the plumbing fittings such as WC, WHB, sinks, and AC systems are, ensure a proper water supply, and remove waste.


Electrical Engineer

An Electrical Engineer is someone who works with electricity. Electrical Engineers are responsible for designing equipment, circuits, and power plants, creating new products, or managing existing systems on a construction project. They visit the site often for inspections and to ensure that all activities comply with their engineering drawings, specifications, and schedules.


Quantity Surveyor

The “Cost Engineer” expert conducts construction cost estimates and analyzes building design plans. They consider the various costs of designing a building and then estimate how much it would cost. This includes all the necessary equipment, supplies, and labour to construct the building.

Land Surveyor

People hire Surveyors to locate buildings and determine boundaries along property lines. Land Surveyors use tools to determine distances between points, angles, heights, and elevations.

Estate Surveyor and Valuer

An Estate Surveyor specializes in land ownership, property rights, and management. He/she provides services related to the transfer of real estate property to and from owners and transferees. This includes surveys, appraisals, and title searches. An Estate Surveyor must have a degree in surveying.

Project Manager

The Project Manager actively manages Building/ Construction projects, taking all necessary steps to ensure a successful outcome. They are responsible for managing the budget and schedule, negotiating with contractors, subcontractors, and consultants regarding the project’s scope, delegating tasks to team members, and ensuring the project’s successful completion.

Builder

A Builder is an individual who has received training and obtained a license to oversee building projects and supervise the workers engaged in the construction process.

Town Planners

Town Planners actively decide the type of development that should occur in a particular area. They collaborate with architects and engineers to determine the most suitable land utilisation. Town Planners typically prepare and oversee plans for new residential developments, roads, parks, schools, and commercial areas.
